HRH Duke of Gloucester Opens The Lena Anderton Meeting Room

HRH Duke of Gloucester unveils

The newly refurbished Lena Anderton meeting room was officially opened on the 24th October 2007, by His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester. The Duke toured The Sight Centre, Scott Street, Keighley before officially opening the Lena Anderton Meeting Room.

Grandson of King George V, and second cousin to the Queen. The Duke trained as an architect, but has carried out full time royal duties since 1970. He supports many organizations in the areas of architecture, healthcare and cultural relations.

Work on the refurbishment of former Social Centre for the Blind was completed in April 2007, as part of the Associations Centenary Celebrations. Now known as the Lena Anderton Meeting room, the room was renamed in memory of the Late Lena Anderton, a friend of the Association, who’s legacy made the refurbishment possible.

HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY (Extract from Keighley News article 7th June 1958)

Since 9th May 1907 when the Keighley Town Mission to the Sick and Needy was started at 1, Rook Street (opposite Eagle Street off Highfield Lane, now Rosemount Walk Flats) then the home of Miss Haigh. In 1910 the mission moved to 13 Scott Street, Keighley which was rented from Mr Wilson Bailey. Help and hospitality was offered to all blind persons resident in the Worth Valley, Silsden and Cross Hills district and since 1915 the Skipton area. In 1911 a lady health visitor was appointed with permission to visit the blind in their homes. A successful appeal was made in 1919 resulting in the purchase of 13, Scott Street and 4, Spencer Street. The house in Spencer Street was let and Mr Herbert Smith, a blind man became caretaker at Scott Street. On November 20th 1919 the title of the Town Mission was changed to Keighley and District Institution for the Blind. The Institution was established with the Ministry of Health on November 20th 1920 and the first constitution defined.

In 1959 The Institution became Keighley and District Association for the Blind.
